The NFL Draft

The NHL Entry Draft is considered to be the most important day in the hockey league. Four teams will be qualified to have a first round draft pick (and no other team can have more than two picks). All four clubs are required to present their players for selection, which means that all fans can get an opportunity to watch some exciting hockey. This article will provide you with a general overview of the UFA process.

A UFA is an unrestricted free agent (ulu). A Limited Contract Player (LCP) is restricted by a contract (one year or longer) and cannot sign another contract for a specified amount of time. An LCP cannot sign a free agent deal or enter into an arbitration settlement while his current contract is in effect. If an LCP signs a one-year contract and decides to become an unrestricted free agent in the future, he has to give up his rights to become a LCP in the future. An LCP may be sent to an entry camp if he is not registered with the NHL club for at least four years.

An UFA who signs a one year contract is called a Prospect or RFA. He cannot sign another contract for one year or longer. He cannot receive a qualifying offer (top offer) from another team during the current season. Prospects may also choose to register as free agents if they qualify based on age (ten years old or over) and/or if they sign a one year contract. Prospects may be subject to fines if they are caught smoking, using illegal substances, or driving under the influence.

An UFA cannot sign a two years deal after his contract expires if he was a first round draft pick (first overall pick if applicable). He cannot be traded between teams during the entire season or during the offseason unless he signs an contract after his release. Teams that sign an unconditional contract with an UFA following his release cannot trade him during the regular season or during the offseason. The salary cap is only applicable to players with contracts that start at the conclusion of the current season. Contracts that start at the beginning of the next season count. An UFA that signs a one-year contract but decides to test the market and enter into arbitration will be placed on the exempt list. During the offseason, no club is allowed to offer an UFA a contract that would make him sign a longer contract. If an UFA signs an offer sheet, it is grounds for a breach of contract charge. As long as the offer sheet does not include a performance component, the player is not guilty of breaking the contract. A breach of a contract is a serious matter and carries severe penalties with it.

The salary cap and the signing bonus of a player are very important factors in a free agency scenario. These aspects cannot be altered once a contract has been signed. Players that receive seven or eight million dollar contracts are very rare and it is unlikely that such a player would be willing to play the type of football that is required of a backup quarterback. In such cases, the obvious move is for the player to sign a one-year contract to remain with his current team.
